Applied Music Theory II

Learner Outcomes: 

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to: demonstrate a mastery of Level II sight singing; perform appropriate conducting techniques; demonstrate a mastery of Level II ear training; and retain theory through written application (academic theory). Additionally, students in the intermediate or advanced course will be able to: sight sing ensemble sections from Musical Theatre literature; demonstrate advanced level ear training; practice chord transposition; identify form (ABA, AABA, etc.); analyze a song; define cadences; and transpose melodies. 

Instruction: 

This course continues to build the skills introduced in the first semester. Students hone their singing skills by sight reading ensemble sections from musical theatre literature. New material includes: transposition, chords and their transposition; form (ABA, AABA, etc.) and analysis of song in these forms; and cadences. New skills include: transposition of a melody from a lead sheet and sight singing musical theatre ensemble material. By the end of the second semester, students should be independent sight readers within ensemble segments of music theatre literature. 

Credit recommendation: 

In the lower division baccalaureate/associate degree category OR in the upper division baccalaureate degree category, 1 semester hour in Musical Theatre and related disciplines (5/10) (7/15 revalidation). NOTE: This course and Applied Music Theory I form a 2 semester hour course in Musical Theatre and related disciplines.
