Conceptual Physics (PHYS 101)

Upon successful completion of the learning experience, students will be able to: identify the concepts of physics as they pertain to their application in the allied health field and cardiovascular technology; explain how waves and sound are directly associated with medical sonography; apply Bernoulli’s principles as it pertains to normal blood flow through vessels; discuss the scientific significance that Newton’s laws have on modern civilization, explain types of energy and how they are related to ultrasound machines; analyze and understand sound waves and properties of waves applicable to medical ultrasound; illustrate frequency, wavelength, and amplitude of waves and apply these concepts to diagnostic ultrasound procedures; demonstrate the usage of scientific and qualitative reasoning to convert mathematical values from the English system into the metric system, and vice versa.
Major topics include: Textbook reading; lecture; Powerpoints; worksheets; exams; lab activities; research and Powerpoint presentation by student. Prerequisite: None
In the lower division baccalaureate / associate degree category, 4 semester hours total distributed as 3 semester hours in Principles of Physics, Conceptual Physics, or Introduction to Physics, and 1 semester hour in Lab (5/22).
