Normal Speech and Language Development (DES334)

Learner Outcomes: 

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to: describe the components of language; describe the stages and various aspects of normal language development; analyze a language sample in a pre-school aged child; and state and describe professional terminology connected with language development.

Instruction: 

Topics  covered are: theories of language development, language milestones, cognitive and sociological bases for development of language, bilingualism, language development during pre-school through adulthood, and social contexts of interpersonal communication. Methods of instruction include lecture, classroom exercises, and language sample analysis. Pre- or corequisite: Introduction to Communication Disorders (DES222).  

Credit recommendation: 

In the lower division baccalaureate/asociate degree category OR in the upper division baccalaureate degree category, 3 semester hours in Speech Language Pathology or Audiology (2/11) (4/16 revalidation) (3/21 revalidation).
