Learner Outcomes: 

Version 1: Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to: discuss needs analysis, performance objectives, questioning techniques, evaluation instruments, training aids, and classroom management and use these effectively in preparing and delivering instruction; prepare in writing a detailed lesson plan; give an extended oral presentation on a police related topic before a group, utilizing the prepared lesson plan and the techniques emphasized in the course. Version 2: In addition to the learner outcomes in Version 1, students will be able to design an electronic presentation using Microsoft PowerPoint, when given a sample document and files. 

Instruction: 

Version 1: Course participants prepare a detailed written lesson plan according to the methods presented in the lecture. They also prepare several oral presentations, ranging from five minute and fifteen minute presentations on general topics to a thirty minute presentation on a police related topic, using the written lesson plan they prepared as the guide to the presentation. The presentations are graded on content, class presence, and the use of appropriate techniques and training aids. Topics include: use of icebreakers; communication skills; public speaking; principles of instruction; presenting oral instruction; needs analysis; research techniques; writing performance objectives; preparing lesson plans; questioning techniques; evaluation theories; evaluative instruments; motivation; designing effective training aids; classroom management and the use of various instructional strategies. Version 2: All topics in Version 1; in addition, electronic presentation methods.

Credit recommendation: 

Version 1 and 2: In the upper division baccalaureate degree category, 3 semester hours as Educational Methods in Education or as an elective in Police Science or Criminal Justice (8/93) (5/96 revalidation) (5/01 revalidation) (6/06 revalidation) (6/11 revalidation) (6/16 revalidation) (6/21 revalidation).
