Project Management (Track IV)

Learner Outcomes: 

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to: identify a predominant approach to project management and the skills that require further development; develop compelling concept proposals and charters; outline the leadership styles needed to effectively develop a project team; assist in nurturing a vision; influence stakeholders; manage conflict; motivate teams; manage project constraints on resources, time and requirements; articulate methods for developing realistic estimates and baselines for project success; develop and apply skills for creating strategies that help ensure timely completion of projects; identify methods for effectively applying baselines and executing management plans to control and produce desired results; integrate and apply newly acquired project management knowledge and techniques to create a smooth transition to project closeout; explain the role of strategic planning; discuss the agency’s budget process;  define business analysis and its role in developing organizational strategies; define internal controls and risk mitigation; and orally present the final project.

Instruction: 

This internship program provides an academic focus on the core components of project management from initial idea to closeout and gives an in-depth introduction to the discipline of project management similar to ESI-International"s "Managing Projects" three-day course. Instruction also focuses on OSC's method for completing projects OSC SMART Projects (Systematic method and reliable techniques). Major topics include: Project Initiation (The Benefit of Business Analysis, Eliciting Requirements from Customers, determine project manager and team member roles); Business Analysis Body of Knowledge (BABOK) competencies overview; business analyst and elicitation skills; Lean/Six Sigma; Lean Value Stream Mapping; Lean Improvement Methods; data flow diagrams; project leadership; project planning and scheduling baselines presentation; execution, control, and closeout; and delivery, acceptance, and celebration.

Credit recommendation: 

In the lower division baccalaureate/associate degree category OR in the upper division baccalaureate degree category, up to 12 semester hours for summer session as an onsite supervised internship or field experience in Project Management, other appropriate academic departments,  or as a general elective (4/13) (9/18 revalidation). NOTE: Credit recommendations are valid for both the 12-week summer intensive or the regular 30-week semester experience.
